Three University of The Gambia (UTG) students have been hospitalised at Serekunda General Hospital after police used teargas to disperse their protest.

The students had gathered on campus to demand the immediate reinstatement of two dismissed lecturers accused by university authorities of “peddling false claims” against the institution.

In response to the dismissals, UTG staff and students issued a statement calling on the university’s management and board to reconsider their decision and reinstate the senior lecturers.

After dialogue efforts appeared to fail, students staged a protest on Monday, describing the dismissals as “unjust”.

Despite a police warning on Sunday against unauthorised demonstrations, the students went ahead with their protest, asserting their constitutional right to seek justice.
