The United Democratic Party (UDP) has condemned an audio clip circulating on social media in which an individual, alleged to be a party sympathizer, made tribal and xenophobic remarks targeting a particular community.
In a statement, the party stressed that the individual did not identify as a UDP member, but emphasised that it “strongly condemns and completely distances itself from all forms of tribalism, xenophobia, and hate speech.”
The UDP described such remarks as “unacceptable, irresponsible, and fundamentally contrary to the values, principles, and long-standing tradition of the party.”
A national party built on unity and inclusiveness, the UDP highlighted its commitment to tolerance and respect for the dignity of all Gambians, regardless of tribe, ethnicity, religion, or background.
“The Gambia’s diversity is a source of strength, not division,” the statement said.
The party also called on all citizens, supporters, and sympathizers to act responsibly in their public statements and to reject narratives aimed at dividing the country along tribal or ethnic lines.
The UDP reaffirmed its commitment to promoting national cohesion, peaceful coexistence, and respect for the country’s shared identity as one people and one nation.
