The United Democratic Party (UDP) has fired back at President Adama Barrow’s claim that opposition leaders are his “apprentices,” saying the party is “nobody’s apprentice” but rather “President Barrow’s master.”
Speaking to journalists at Banjul International Airport during the welcome reception for UDP leader Ousainu Darboe, senior party official and Brikama Area Council chairman Yankuba Darboe said Barrow’s comments were misplaced.
“President Barrow said the opposition are his apprentices; that is why the numbers are good today. We want to show him that we are his masters,” he said.

Darboe argued that the UDP played a pivotal role in Barrow’s political rise, calling it “illogical for a mentor to become a student.”
“Who you have taught can never be your master. We are the drivers and the masters. The NPP are our apprentices, and they should accept that,” he added.
He also declared that the UDP is confident of victory in the 2026 presidential election, warning that the party will not tolerate any form of electoral malpractice.
“In 2026, we will apprehend those who try to steal elections. The will of the people will prevail, and we will win,” he said.
