The United Democratic Party (UDP) is today celebrating its 30th anniversary with a grand rally at the Brikama SSP Football Field, bringing together party members and supporters from across the country.
The anniversary marks three decades of the UDP’s political journey and its role in The Gambia’s democratic process.
Veteran opposition leader and UDP leader Ousainou Darboe received a rousing welcome as he arrived at the rally, standing on the roof of his Cadillac Escalade and waving to enthusiastic supporters who chanted his name.

The UDP has contested several presidential elections since its formation, facing former president Yahya Jammeh and current President Adama Barrow.
Darboe served as the party’s presidential candidate in 1996, 2001, 2006, 2011 and 2021. He did not contest the 2016 election as he was imprisoned at the time, when Adama Barrow won as the coalition candidate.

The anniversary rally provides an opportunity for the party to celebrate its history, honour its supporters and reflect on its contribution to The Gambia’s democratic development.
