The United Democratic Party (UDP) staged a march on Saturday to protest against the government’s decision to issue national documents to Gambians abroad.

The demonstration, organised by the party’s youth wing, drew hundreds of supporters, including both young and elderly members.

Protesters carried placards and used loudspeakers to voice their opposition to the initiative, which began in Mauritania.

UDP youth wing president Haji Suwaneh, who led the march, described the move as a violation of Gambian law.

He urged the National Assembly to block the programme, warning it could undermine the credibility of national documents.

“We believe this is a violation of the law,” he told the crowd.

Suwaneh said the party had raised its concerns with the Immigration Department and the Interior Minister but had not received a positive response.

Another senior member, Dodou Kassa Jatta, criticised President Barrow’s administration, saying it was not acting in the best interest of the country.

He vowed the party would resist what he described as irregularities in the electoral process.
