The United Democratic Party (UDP) is facing fresh turmoil as Karafa Sonko, the party’s National Campaign Manager, has resigned, citing a loss of faith in the party’s direction.
Sonko, who joined the UDP at its inception in 1996, said his decision came after “profound and prolonged reflection.” In a statement, he described the party he once loved as having “lost its way,” adding that he could no longer, in good conscience, lead campaigns for a party whose values he no longer endorses.
“My most profound duty was serving as Campaign Manager for the Coalition 2016, a historic effort reflecting the hopes of our nation,” Sonko said.
“For nearly three decades, the UDP has been my political home. It is with immense sadness that I must step away.”
He thanked party leader H.E. ANM Ousainu Darboe and senior members for their support over the years, while wishing the party well in its future endeavours.
The resignation marks another high-profile departure amid growing internal tensions within the UDP.
