The Coalition of Progressive Gambians (CoPG), has criticised Minister of Works, Transport, and Infrastructure, Ebrima Sillah, over his call for supporters of the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) to stage a counter-protest against anti-corruption campaigners.

It described the minister’s comments as “a shameful attack on democracy and a defence of corruption.”

Mr Sillah’s remarks came after Gambians Against Looted Assets staged a peaceful demonstrations aimed at promoting transparency and accountability in government.

Rather than supporting these efforts, CoPG alleges that the minister has “chosen to defend the corrupt, attack those calling for justice, and incite partisan resistance.”

“This is not only morally bankrupt, it is a betrayal of democratic values and a dangerous abuse of office,” the coalition said in a s statement.

The group issued a series of demands, including disciplinary action against the minister, greater independence and resources for the country’s Anti-Corruption Commission, and immediate government action on public corruption complaints.

“Corruption is not a party matter, it is a national crisis. Defending it is complicity,” the statement added.

CoPG also urged President Adama Barrow to publicly distance himself from Mr Sillah’s remarks.

The coalition called on Gambians to reject what it described as “a dangerous charade,” framing the issue not as political but as fundamental to the country’s future.

“We remain committed to the peaceful, lawful, and unshakable demand for system change, until corruption is no longer protected, but punished,” it said.
