Yankuba Minteh emerged as the hero for Gambia, scoring a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser to secure a 1-1 draw against Madagascar in a gripping AFCON qualifier.

Madagascar initially took the lead with a stunning goal, showcasing their attacking prowess despite Gambia’s relentless pressure.

However, in a thrilling finish, Minteh stepped up to find the back of the net just when it seemed Gambia might leave empty-handed.

The match faced a brief halt when Madagascar looked set to double their lead, only for the goal to be disallowed due to a handball, much to the relief of Gambian supporters.

Following the match, Gambia’s coach, Jonathan McKinstry, commended his players for their determination but emphasised the need for improvement in converting set pieces into goals.

“It’s another game, but we need personal responsibility and quality in those moments,” he stated. “Yankuba’s goal was crucial, and now we look ahead to our next challenge.”
