A large group of young Gambians has staged a big protest at the Westfield junction, causing major traffic disruptions in the area.

The demonstration is in response to the continued detention of 27 youths arrested following a peaceful assembly on Thursday.

The protesters had gathered to express their opposition to the sale of assets belonging to former President Yahya Jammeh.

In a display of defiance, the protesters stopped traffic and held a 2pm prayer on the busy highway, demanding the immediate and unconditional release of the detained youths.

Police quickly deployed their high command to the scene, attempting to engage in talks with the demonstrators in a bid to de-escalate the situation.

As tensions rise, the police have promised that the detained youths will be released, though they have not provided a specific timeline for their release.

The protesters, however, are calling for further action, including the publication of a list detailing the buyers of the former president’s assets.

Youth groups across the country are now mobilising to organise a larger demonstration, vowing to continue the fight until their demands are met.

The situation remains fluid, with many hoping for a peaceful resolution, but uncertainty about the authorities’ next steps.
