A estimated 118 inmates escaped from a prison in Nigeria on Wednesday night after rainstorm destroyed the facility. 

The prison, a Medium Security Custodial Centre in Suleja, Niger State, was partially destroyed by torrential rains. 

Spokesman for the Nigerian Correctional Service, Adamu Duza, confirmed on Thursday the centre’s infrastructure the perimeter fence was damaged allowing the inmates to flee, reports The Punch newspaper. 

He said 10 of the escaped inmates were recaptured while a nationwide search for the remaining fleeing inmates is ongoing.
