At least 35 women food processors on Saturday completed a three-day training on food processing skills development and fundamentals of food safety hygiene and quality control.
The training organized by MAA Foundation in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture and Ministry Trade, Regional Integration and Employment, brought together women representatives across the 7 regions of the country.
Meanwhile, participants, who came from different professions like farming food processing, and restaurant jobs were trained on how prepare and handle food in a hygienic manner for consumption.
Alsaan Sey MB Bah, from the Communication Unit at the Ministry of Agriculture, said “It will have a positive impact on the Agricultural sector because the trainees have learnt so many things. When you prepare good food and sell them abroad it will have an impact on our reputation and generate money for the country.”
Ida Ndure, a trainer, said the training would help the women in their various works, adding that the women have learned so many new things from the training.
Musa F Sowe, president of National Coordinating Organization-The Gambia, said “we want to empower women since they are the one producing what we consume.”
He said the only way to empower the women is training them in their works and providing funds to support them in their jobs.
Over 70 per cent of food produced in the Gambia are done by women.
