A 40-year-old Gambian housewife has taken her own life after her husband was alleged to have impregnated their daughter.
The deceased identified as Basin Gaye was reported to have thrown herself in a well at Galleh Manda village on Sunday September 13.
A rescue team from the Gambia Fire and Rescue Services was dispatched to the village but they could not saved the woman. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
The corpse was taken to Bansang Hospital for postmortem examination. The accused husband and the pregnant daughter are helping the police in their investigations.
Police spokesman superintendent Lamin Njie told Gambiana: “Police have opened up an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
“The claims that the incident is suicide related cannot be substantiated as at now, as investigation is ongoing.”
