The security adviser to Gambian leader Adama Barrow has said they are committed to achieving a reformed security sector that will understand and accept the supervision of civil authority.

Retired Army General, Momodou Badjie, was speaking to Gambiana on Monday at the launch of a five day retreat for the drafting of National security and Security Sector Reform.

“A reform security sector simply means a sector that will be able to deliver very professionally, very effectively, very efficiently and also be able to respect human rights and rule of law. The same sector should be able to understand and accept the supervision of the civil authority,” he said.

Mr Badjie said his committee is committed towards achieving a reformed security sector that “will understand and accept the supervision of the civil authority”.

At least twenty drafters are currently at the retreat for the drafting of National Security and Security Sector Reform at Sindola Hotel in Kanilai.

They (drafters) are selected from all the sister forces in the country-the army, police, immigration, prison, police, fire services and people from various State Institutions.

Meanwhile, Mr Badjie emphasized that “I keep on saying service and delivery of tangible security is base on several factors but basically we as members of the security sector are doing our best.”

Last week, President Adama Barrow launched the National Security Policy retreat for drafting of the National Security and Security Sector Reform that aims to maintain, safeguard and defend national core values which will ensure the safety, security and prosperity of the Gambia.
