Army sergeant, Amadou Badjie, became the third member of infamous hit squad, the Jungulers, to testify on his heinous actions during Jammeh’s reign of terror.

Sergeant Badjie appeared before the Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission (TRRC) investigating the human rights abuses and atrocities that occurred under the regime of the now exiled president, Yahya Jammeh.

The army sergeant admitted his role in torturing two Gambian Muslim scholars who were detained after daring to speak against the former president.

Imam Baba Leigh and Imam Ba Kawsu Fofana were both arrested by the former regime for sermons they made during Friday prayers that were critical of Jammeh.

He accused them of hiding behind religion to propagate a political agenda that was critical of his government.

Sergeant told the Commission that Major Nuha Badjie asked them to torture Imam Baba Leigh while he was in their custody.

“Nuha Badjie called us to beat him (Baba Leigh), then we took sticks and pipes and started beating him.

“I knew that it was wrong but in the army when your senior gives you command – you only obey.”

Sergeant conceded that what he did was wrong and asked for forgiveness from the two imams ( Baba Leigh and Ba Kawsu Fofana) for all the wrong he had done them.

He claimed that he joined the Jungulers without actually knowing what he was putting himself into, saying that he was told by Nuha Badjie and Sulayma Badjie that they would be patrolling the Gambia – Senegal border of Cassamance.

Meanwhile, Badjie has denied that he was involved in any killing, but admitted participating in arrests, torture and the digging of graves of the people who were killed by his unit, the Jungulers.
