The Alliance for Patriotic Reorientation and Construction (APRC) has called on United Nations and African Union to put pressure on the Barrow government “to adhere to the signed agreement” that led to Jammeh’s exile.

The former ruling party’s interim leader, Fabakary Tombong Jatta, told reporters at a press conference last week that the Barrow government has failed to honour the agreement that provided guarantees to former president Yahya Jammeh in exchange for a peaceful transfer of power.

“We challenged the United Nations, the AU to put pressure on this government to ensure that the document is adhered to strictly otherwise they will lose credibility within the region and indeed the entire world.

“They will no longer be able to negotiate between parties … which party will trust them.”

Mr. Jatta said former president Jammeh signed an agreement with the Barrow government in a negotiation led by the United Nations, African Union and the Economic Community of West African States before he left for exile to Equatorial Guinea in 2017.

He however alleged that: “immediately President Jammeh left the shores of this country that document was thrown to the dustbin.”

He described the seizure of Jammeh’s tractors and other assets by the Barrow government as ‘illegal’ adding that “the government should have given those tractors to Gambian farmers rather than keeping them”.

The Gambia was plunged into a political impasse in December 2016 following the shock electoral defeat of the country’s autocratic president Yahya Jammeh by an opposition alliance led by Adama Barrow. Jammeh conceded defeat at first which he rescinded a week later.

An international mediation team backed by a military intervention forces from the Ecowas subregion helped end a political impasse that brought the country to the brink of a civil war.

The Barrow government established a Commission of Inquiry into the financial dealings of former president Yahya Jammeh. The Commission recommends the seizure of Jammeh’s assets and properties.
