The United Democratic Party (UDP) has called on President Adama Barrow to honour the three-year Coalition agreement and step down in December.

The party in a press conference today called on President Barrow to respect all four of the Coalition’s agreement which includes serving as a transitional leader for three years.

“If [the three years] was not part of the agreement, there would have been no Coalition,” the party leader, Ousainou Darboe told journalists in Manjai.

“The UDP urges all the parties to the Coalition agreement and particularly the principal beneficiary of the Coalition agreement that is His Excellency President Adama Barrow to be faithful to what was the agreement by all the parties including President Adama Barrow and also for President Adama Barrow to fulfil his promises to the electorate.

“That if he is elected president he will serve a term of three years, step down, supervise elections and hand over the office of the presidency to whoever is elected in that elections.”

Mr Darboe, who until his recent fallout with President Barrow, was the political godfather and confidante of the president.

He was sacked from his post as Vice President of The Gambia along with two other cabinet ministers, all from the UDP, in a major cabinet reshuffle in March 2019.

President Barrow had already made it clear that he intended to serve his five year term in office in line with the constitution.

In 2016 seven of the opposition political parties formed a Coalition to challenge the incumbent president Yahya Jammeh.

A memorandum of understanding was signed among the parties stating out the conditions of the Coalition which included a three year agreement for the transitional president.

Mr Barrow, a businessman and the flag bearer of the UDP, was chosen to head the Coalition.

Jammeh was defeated in a shock election results which triggered a political impasse after he refused to handover power to the opposition alliance.
