Gambians in China have been advised to take precautionary measures to protect themselves from the deadly coronavirus which has killed over 100 people and infected 9,000 in that country.

There are about 20 Gambian students in Wuhan, the epicentre of the deadly virus but officials at The Gambian Embassy in Beijing have confirmed that there were no reported cases of infected Gambians.

The Charge D’Affaires of The Gambian embassy in Beijing Fatou Kinneh Jobe said the embassy is
monitoring the situation and is in contact with the Gambian Students Association in China and the Gambian community in Guanzou, one of Chilna’s major commercial city.

“In Wuhan the epicentre of the disease, there are 20 Gambian students living there and (I’m) happy to report that there are no Gambian infected,” Mrs Jobe told APA news.

The Gambia however has not divulge any information about a possible evacuation of its citizens. Several other countries have already evacuated their citizens from China.

On Thursday the World Health Organisation (WHO) declared the coronavirus a global health emergency.

Health officials in the Gambia said they are monitoring the situation and taking preventive measures to protect the public.
