Majmouat Rawdatul Majaalis, a Muslim group, has threatened legal action against Gambia police if they are not given fair treatment after one of their members was allegedly manhandled by police over derogatory remarks directed at former State House Imam.
A Jarra Sutukung man identified as Amadou Sillah who is alleged to have insulted Imam Abdoulie Fatty, was arrested and released on police bail.
The group’s spokesman of Rawdatul Majaalis Aboubakar Jabbie told Gambiana: “we will take action; we are Gambians and we have our civic rights as others – we will do something. We will take legal action which is our right.”
He added: “We need justice, a simple justice. Our leader was insulted the same way Imam Fatty was insulted and they treat us very differently.”
According to him “one of (members of) these groups call Sunni named Alieu Fatty insulted our leader new Supreme Islamic Council leader Sheriff Nano Hydara very, very nasty words and we took the matter to Brusubi police station.”
He described the police arrest as ‘not civil at all’ explaining that “two trucks loaded with paramilitary personnel came to arrest that person like a criminal.”
