Opposition Gambia Democratic Congress’s leader has said homosexuality will never be allowed in The Gambia.
Mamma Kandeh’s comment comes amid criticism of a campaign by the EU’s ambassador to The Gambia supporting the rights of homosexuals in the country after he was quoted to have said “EU is ready to campaign for the rights of those people who wanted to be gays and lesbians in the country adding that as every Gambian has the right to participate in the societal discuss of the country.”
“The issue of condemning gay marriage in the country is not even a question on my side. What I wanted to tell the European Union Ambassador is that his intention to campaign for gay marriage in the country will never happen,” he said.
Mr. Kandeh added: “If the reason of the EU giving us financial assistance that is why they are imposing the practice of gay marriage in the country I can inform to you it will never take place even if it will go until the last person in the country it will not be accepted.
“Let the EU leave us to live peacefully with our cultures and traditions. We have never as Africans and Gambians in particular impose anything that will undermine their cultures and values as Europeans.
“Why will the EU even have the audacity to voice the campaign of gay marriage in the country? But I can only blame the government of President Barrow who has already given them the space to utter such a statement without any condemnation.”
The opposition leader said: “The EU was not mad enough to express such announcement during the time of former President Jammeh. And they were still here so why did they not express their readiness to support gay marriage. I believe they would not have the spent night in the country.”
