Police commander Gorgi Mboob has been put on administrative leave as an internal investigation is launched over allegations that he attacked one Ebrima Sanneh on his genital.
Commander Mboob is facing accusations of assault, forced labour, torture including using a hoe to attack 26-year-old Ebrima Sanneh last Saturday at the ACU premises.
Police spokesman Superintendent Lamin Njie confirmed Gorgi Mboob’s suspension and investigation.
“Yes we can confirm (his suspension), and an investigation has been constituted to look into the allegations,” he told the Fatunetwork.
The police initially stood by Gorgi Mboob when the allegations were made on Saturday denied calling the reports “fake news”.
They have since retracted the “fake news” statement against the press and launched an investigation into the serious allegations of torture.
There was mounting pressure from Gambians for actions to be taken against the head of the police Anti-Crime Unit who was described as “acting as if he was above the law”.
Among the dozens of people calling forhis sacking includes Madi Jobarteh, a human rights activist who wrote on Facebook “I hereby demand IGP Mamour Jobe to arrest Gorgui Mboob ASAP if not I demand Pres. Barrow to sack both of them ASAP & prosecute them for negligence of duty, abuse of power, violation of citizen rights & Police brutality.”
