The report of the death of Lt Yahya Jammeh at Mile Two prison is untrue, prison sources have said. 

On Monday the rumoured death of Lt Jammeh (not the former president) went viral on social media. The message stated: 

“Lt. Yaya Jammeh, one of the soldiers jailed last year for plotting to overthrow President Adama Barrow’s government, has died in prison. 

Rest in Peace, Lieutenant!”

Prison sources said the rumours were “untrue” and that Lt Jammeh is “alive and well”. 

Lt Jammeh is serving a nine-year jail term after a military court convicted him and seven other soldiers of a plot to overthrow the Barrow government in 2017.
