President Adama Barrow’s hand pick lawmaker has promised to ensure the draft constitution doesn’t get parliamentary approval, describing it as “a copy and paste constitution from Kenya”.
Nominated member Majanko Samusa was participating in the debate on the draft constitution on Monday at the National Assembly.
“This is very disappointing; we can’t just take this book and adopt it. So, me, I am totally against it and I am not going to say any more thing, and even this parliament approve this constitution honestly Madam speaker I bet, I will be in front during the referendum and I will make sure that it fails, which is my constitutional right,” Mr Samusa said.
The public including lawmakers have been divided over the draft constitution since the commission tasked to draft the national statute book submitted it to the government earlier this year.
And Nominated Member Samusa is one of those lawmakers who had blatantly made clear his opposition against the draft constitution.
“I will campaign against it vigorously because we cannot quote from a constitution from Kenya – a constitution that today is in Kenyan high court challenged by the Kenyan citizens expressing their concerns. Is a very [un] scrupulous constitution. How can you bring that word-to-word – photocopy it [and] put it in our constitution,” he added.
