The People’s Progressive Party has expelled Banjul south MP Fatoutama Touma Njai for what they called “gross and serious violation of the [party’s] constitution”.
Ms Njai has been at loggerheads with the PPP executive led by Kebba Jallow following accusations of fraud at the party’s leadership election in Brikama-Ba last month.
The MP refused to acknowledge Mr Jallow’s election win and formed her own alternative executive to run the party.
Now the party’s has decided to use the nuclear option by expelling Touma Njai from the party.
A letter of dismissal signed by Kebba E Jallow, Secretary General and Party leader of PPP, said: “The National Executive committee of the PPP regrets to inform you that you are expelled from the people’s Progressive Party (PPP) with immediate effect.”
She was accused of violating article 32 of the PPP’s constitution which “provides for the disciplinary actions against a member whose behaviour brings the party into disrepute or which manifests a flagrant violation of the moral integrity expected of members or conduct unbecoming that of a member”.
The PPP, which is one of the oldest political parties in The Gambia, has been embroiled in a bitter leadership crisis since the former leader Omar Jallow, OJ, stepped down from the role.
The last leadership election between political upstart Papa Njie and the party’s grandee BB Darboe also descended into chaos after the latter claimed vote rigging allegation leading to a split in the party.
