Opposition parties Gambia Moral Congress (GMC), Citizens’ Alliance (CA) and Gambia Action Party (GAP) have vowed to appeal against the Independent Electoral Commission.
Candidates from the parties were rejected by the electoral body on Saturday for failing to meet the nomination requirements for the December 4 presidential election.
Gambia Action Party’s senior administrative secretary Muhammed Yaffa said in a statement: “As far as i know, the Gambia Action Party fulfillied all the requirements and will file an appeal against the Chairman’s decision that disqualified our candidate.
“GAP did not forged the process. We are calling on all GAP supporters to remain loyal to the rule of law as enshrined in our modus operandi. We will survive this test too.”
CA leader and presidential candidate Dr Ismaila Ceesay said: “I want to make it clear that we submitted over 250 signatures or nominations from Banjul but IEC is saying that what they have is less than 200.
“Just to let you know that we have made a decision to appeal this decision by the IEC. By tomorrow we will send in the appeal and we will wait for the outcome of the IEC and then we will keep you updated.”
Ahmed Mai Fatty reacted to the rejection saying:”I am disappointed that the IEC claimed the reason for not accepting my nomination was because we did not have the required number of 200 voters nomination from Banjul.
“This is inaccurate. We filed way in excess of that number with the IEC. The process is not yet over. I will file an immediate appeal against this wrongful decision. I am convinced that the improper decision would be reversed.”
