The Gambia government has announced new price on groundnut as it seeks to win over the farming sector.
Groundnut will now cost D28,000 per tonne.
Last year, the price per tonne of groundnut was D20,000 leading farmers to protest against it. The government yielded to the farmers demands and increase it to D23,000.
“Definitely this is unprecedented because this never happened in the history of The Gambia. You will see that China has even bought millions of tonnes and the market isn’t there for the government but they decided to come with this price just to ensure farmers are happy,”Muhammed Njie, manager of The Gambia Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Agriculture and Employers Association told Gambiana.
“D28,000 per tonne is what the president [Adama Barrow] has announced this year for the price of groundnut.”
