A huge crowd of United Democratic Party supporters have gathered at the residence of their party leader in Pipeline to protest Saturday’s presidential election results.
Party leader Ousainou Darboe has urged his supporters to disperse to their respective homes and called on the police chief to order his officers to de-escalate the situation.
He said his supporters are not trying to hold any protest, adding they are peaceful group.
Police in riot gears and water canon were deployed to the area to keep the peace.
“We need justice, one Gambia, one nation. Let him go down and the election was not free and fair,” one of the UDP supporters who indentified himself as Ousman Fatty told reporters. .
“We don’t like Adama Barrow and he must go because I hate him,” another female supporter said.
Darboe lost his fifth bid for the presidency afer President Adama Barrow, his former protege, defeated him.
He has refused to concede defeat despite the wide margin of the election results.
Other defeated candidates have conceded and congratulated President Adama Barrow on his re-election.
