The heads of Ecowas, AU and Commonwealth election observer teams have met with opposition leader Ousainou Darboe amid dispute over the December 4 presidential election results. 

Olusengun Obasanjo, Ngalema Mothlanthe and Ernest Bai Koroma, all former heads of state met Ousainou Darboe yesterday at his residence in Pipeline. 

The heads of the three observer missions appealed to Mr Darboe to rein in his supporters and to keep the peace. 

They also urged Mr Darboe to use the legal alternative to resolve any disagreements he may have with the election results. 

Mr Darboe told the leaders that he has been in opposition for 20 years without creating any social unrest, nor does he intend to do so. If need be, he assured that he would make use of the courts.

In their individual preliminary statements released this morning, all the observer missions urged political parties to keep the peace and commended the Gambian people for holding a “peaceful, free, transparent and credible election”.
