Three people have been detained for allegedly trying to smuggle illegal drugs into the state central prison, Mile 2, in Banjul.
The alleged drug smugglers have been identified as Modou Lamin Touray, a 22-year-old resident of Latrikunda and Muhammed Jallow age 19 and resident of Serrekunda together with one female Oumie Camara, 20 years old and resident of Lamin.
They were arrested after prison officers on a routine search discovered some quantities of cannabis and clonazepam in three different bottles of body lotion cream.
The Drug Law Enforcement Officers (DLEAG) said the suspects were on a visitation to the central prison to see their inmate relatives.
“After conducting a thorough search, the prison officers discovered some quantities of suspected cannabis and 16 tablets of clonazepam. The three suspects were later handed over to the drug law enforcement officers for further investigation.
“We commend and celebrate the officers of the Gambia prison service for their vigilance, commitment and dedication to duty. The concealment methods, trafficking routes and means of conveyance of prohibited and controlled drugs is continually changing,” DLEAG said in a statement.
“The saddest part of these illegal activities that occur at Mile 2 is having people in their early youthful age engaged in prohibited activities to the point of trying to smuggle illegal drugs into the State Prison.”
