Janjanbureh acute water shortage has forced some residents to shift to using river water for home use such as cooking, bathing and laundering.

Speaking to Gambiana exclusively, Muhammed Kebba, a resident of Janjabureh confirmed that the town has been affected by acute water shortage for so many months without any intervention from the government in addressing the issue.

“This is something true, it is a fact. As you can see right now, I wanted to take a bath to go out, but I can’t and I have to go to the river to take a bath,” he said.

According to him, it has been hours today since they are left without water causing much suffering and inconvenience for the residents of the town.

“This [ water shortage] has been happening and in the morning the water supply didn’t last even half an hour. So, every day is like this, so the whole day people cannot get water. Even one of my friends had to melt blocked water on gas to take a bath this morning.

“In fact, the river is not safe for people. Most of the time people go to the river even though it is risky because it is dangerous. You can say people are not used to river water to cook but they are now using it to cook,” Mr Kebba added.

Meanwhile, Pierre Silver, Public Relations Officer of The Gambia’s National Water and Electricity Company (NAWEC), told Gambiana: “I am driving but that issue has been solved since last night.”
