A former medic officer of the once-feared National Intelligence Agency has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for his role in the death of politician Ebrima Solo Sandeng.
Lamin Lang Sanyang was found guilty of forging the death certificate of the slain politician.
Sanyang was convicted yesterday (13 July) at the High Court in Banjul by Justice Kumba Sillah-Camara.
He was standing trial alongside six former intelligence officers for murdering Ebrima Solo Sandeng while in their custody.
Sandeng and other supporters of the opposition United Democratic Party (UDP) were arrested during a protest calling for political reforms in 2016.
They were beaten and tortured by security officers. Sandeng succumbed to his injuries and was buried without his family’s permission in a makeshift grave in Tanji.
His death in custody changed public opinion against the Jammeh regime and he was forced out of power via the polls eight months after Sandeng’s death in 2016.
Meanwhile, the High Court in Banjul also handed down death sentences to seven state security officers including the former director general of the National Intelligence Agency Yankuba Badjie.
