Bubacarr Keita’s rape trial has been adjourned to Monday (25 July) amid heated scene at the Bundung high court.
There was a heavy police presence as dozens of people supporting Keita went to court today to show their support for him.
The trial has gripped the nation. Gambians of all walks of life have taken an interest in the case which is one of the most followed criminal trials in recent years.
Keita is accused of raping his ex-wife’s 15-year-old sister in 2019 which resulted in a pregnancy. He denies the charge.
However, the trial which has been hampered by delays, is currently playing out on social media.
Mr Keita ex-wife, Sainabou Mbye who is very vocal online, has faced criticism from some sections of the population.
She’s currently in Dakar and police have declared her a person of interest over the tragic death of the child at the centre of the Keita rape trial.
The child, identified as Muhammad, died in tragic circumstances in Senegal last week. His death is being investigated by Gambia police and two people with connection to Ms Mbye have been arrested.
