The Gambia Football Federation president Lamin Kaba Bajo has been elected as the President of the West African Football Union (WAFU) Zone A.

His appointment was made at the 44th General Assembly of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) in Arusha, Tanzania.

Mr Bajo is the first Gambian ever to be elected as WAFU President replacing Guinean Antonio Souare who has been heading the nine-country union for the past three years.

The 57-year-old former army captain was elected unopposed as his football  colleagues gave him their unanimous support.

The Gambia Football Federation (GFF) described his appointment as a mark of his growing influence and the trust bestowed on him by his fellow continental football administrators.

“Mr. Bajo, a consummate public servant and a career diplomat, has been at the helm of affairs when The Gambia secured its first ever qualification to an African Cup of Nations finals in the 70-year history of association football in The Gambia. 

“It was also under his tenure that The Gambia won two WAFU U-20 Cup of Nations titles and is currently the defending champions,” GFF said in a statement.
