Gambia’s Minister of Health Dr Ahmadou Lamin Samateh has visited Cape Verde to learn about the country’s successful malaria elimination strategies.
Cape Verde is reported to be in the advanced stage of eliminating the malaria epidemic from its shores.
The country which is an archipelago has also a successful Covid-19 vaccination campaign.
Dr Samateh and his delegation were in the country for a three day working visit fro. August 3-6.
The minister and his delegation were received by his Cape Verdean counterpart Arlindo do Rosário.
In a joint press conference they pledged to strengthen their bilateral relations.
Arlindo do Rosário said his country despite the challenges had registered successes in the health sector.
He added that the country has registered progress in several areas including the infant mortality rate.
Rosario said that at the time of independence the infant mortality rate in Cape Verde was around 127/1000, but now the latest figures as of 2021 data was 10.5 /1000.
Dr Samateh also took the floor to praise the archipelago’s success in the health sector.
He said: “Cape Verde is on the right path because the development it has experienced in various sectors but especially in the health sector in which it has been referenced in international forums.”
