Ousman Bah, Minister of Digital Economy, has suggested privatising the government-owned mobile GSM company, Gamcel, amid financial trouble and shrinking subscribers.
“What I have seen is that Gamcel definitely needs some actions to be taken right away because Gamcel is at a point of shrinking subscribers. They are running a G3 network. Their market penetration is not that good and a high operating cost at Gamcel,” he said.
“They don’t have the cash flow to re-invest in their company to give it an edge. It is important we privatise Gamcel that is a neccessity in my opinion,” he added.
Meanwhile, the minister said his office is committed to bringing policies that will favour businesses especially e-commerce.
“My team will work with the relevant stakeholders to immediately develop relevant policies which will greately develop both public and private sectors,” Bah said.
