Omar Ceesay, president of The Gambia Transport Union, has hit out at drivers who boycotted their three day strike over rising fuel prices.

Mr Ceesay said the drivers who flouted the strike action were “selfish” and “did not belong to any bona fide car garage” in the country.

“Only those drivers who don’t belong to any car garage plyed the roads. Because they don’t belong to any registered car garage. 

“All they do is go anywhere that serves their interest. But all bona fide car garages from Greater Banjul Area to the rural Gambia answered our call to strike,” Mr Ceesay told Afri Radio. 

He added: “Our target was to get 80% of the strike and we registered over 80%. We knew we wouldn’t register 100% because we knew how it will happen.”

The drivers union on Thursday abandoned their “indefinite strike” following public backlash and drivers’ boycott. 

However, the union said it called off the strike after some trade union bodies intervened to resolve the dispute.
