Gambia beat minnows Benin 1-0 to set up a quarterfinal match against South Sudan in Alexandria.

The Young Scorpions left it late to see off the Young Cheetahs of Benin to finish top of Group C with nine points. 

Gambia have been dominant in the African Cup of Nations U20 competition winning all three of their games and securing nine points without conceding any goal. 

The Young Scorpions equalled its best-ever group stage campaign at an African Youth Championship from its debut competition in 2007.  

Coach Abdoulie Bojang made ten changes to the team that started against Zambia and Tunisia having already booked qualification and top spot in the group with a game to spare.

Benin failed to find the back of the net despite dominating possession earlier while Gambia looked a threat from set pieces through captain Alagie Saine.

The Young Scorpions broke the deadlock against the run of play through Tamimou Ourou’s own goal on 88 minutes after a diving header by Mansour Mbye. 

Gambia will face South Sudan in Alexandria for a place in the semifinals while Tunisia who secured second place will take Congo.

Despite losing to Gambiana and finishing third in Grouo C, Benin still qualified and will face Senegal in the quarterfinals.
