Ahmed Talib Bensouda, mayor of Kanifing Municipal Council, has vowed to win reelection as the race for next month’s local government elections heats up.

The United Democratic Party candidate is facing strong opposition from the ruling National People’s Party. They have drafted in the current minister of youth, Bakary Badjie, as a candidate to replace Bensouda. 

“I am very confident of wining the Mayoral election. Because the development done under my leadership in KMC is enormous. We are committed to development and everyone knows  that,” Bensouda said.

However, he ruled out any ambition to run for the presidency, adding that this is why the government is fighting him in office. 

“I believe the fight against me now on the government side is the notion that I want to be a president of The Gambia. I am not ruling out that in politics. But what I mean is, that’s not my aim either. 

“I dislike the type of politics in The Gambia now because people are castigating and insulting each other. People are into tribal politics,” he added.
