Rev. Father Peter Jammeh has expressed concern about their safety after their star of the sea church in Bakau was attacked by some hooligans on Sunday.

Two people have been arrested and detained by the police as search are being intensifying for other culprits.

The suspected attackers pepper sprayed Father Peter Jammeh and vandalised the statue of the blessed Mary, while people were attending mass.

Speaking exclusively to Gambiana on the matter, Rev Father Peter Jammeh explained that the incident happened after a group of men attacked a white man and an old woman and took away the woman’s wallet and mobile phone.

“So I came down but they were many. Some of them were standing at the junction going to the sea and some were standing going to the other end of Bakau. Then five of the boys were holding alcohol bottles. 

“So, I came down and confronted them and one of them pepper sprayed me and the man who ran to help me in our eyes, and the other boy took a stone. I was engaging seriously and they knew they cannot overcome so one of them used this pepper spray on me,” he told Gambiana.

“My appeal to the government is that we need security because next Sunday we have what we call divine masses Sunday and the whole Catholic and Christian communities are going to be marching out. And my advice to the government is to take security seriously. The government should realise that these are citizens that they owe the responsibility of protecting,”Rev Jammeh added.
