Gambia coach Tom Saintfiet has said the team must win their final group game against Cameroon to stand any chance of making it to the knockout stages. 

Gambia have lost two of their Africa Cup of Nations group matches against Senegal and Guinea Conakry and sits at the bottom of Group C. 

The Scorpions now have a narrow chance of qualifying to the round of 16. They must beat Cameroon and hope Guinea lose to Senegal next Wednesday.  

Saintfiet is hopeful the team will progress to the next round.  

He said: “There is still a small hope and a small dream. I’m still going to be positive about my team. And we are going to work very hard to beat Cameroon to proceed to the second round.”  

The Belgian tactician has come under heavy criticism for his defensive tactics – criticisms he countered as bias among Gambian journalists.

According to him, the Gambia national team “must score two or three goals against Cameroon to win and to stay in the competition”.
