Gambia’s top Judo athlete Faye Njie has clinched bronze medal in the ongoing Senior African Judo Championship in Egypt. 

Faye Njie, who fought in the men’s 73kg category following a victory over Morocco’s Mohamed Jafty in the first round, and another victory over an Angolan opponent in the quarter final.

However, he lost the fight at the semi-final against a Tunisian opponent before winning a bronze medal with an ippon in the golden score against a Djiboutian opponent.

Reacting to his victory, he said: “The bronze medal means that I will most likely qualify now for the upcoming Olympic Games in Paris by gaining the continental quota sport.”

Meanwhile, Faye’s compatriot Abdourahman Ceesay will begin his competition on Saturday April 27. He is up against Paul Kibikai from Gabon in the -90 Kg fight at 10 am.

The Senior African Judo Championship is part of a series of qualifiers for the Summer Olympics Paris 2024.
