Kumba Sinyan has confessed that she killed her estranged boyfriend out of self-defence while two of them wrestled each other in a hotel room.

Sinyan made the confession while appearing before the Banjul High Court on Wednesday.

She is charged with one count of murder over the death of her estranged boyfriend, Momodou Lamarana Jallow, who was an IT staff at the Gambia Chamber of Commerce and Industry. 

She was alleged to have stabbed to death Mr Jallow following a row at the Friendship Hostel, Bakau in September 2022.

However, Ms Sinyan told the court that she has been receiving “threats” from the deceased, adding her estranged boyfriend called her that day to meet with him at the hostel and shaved off his “private part”.

“Lama was naked and lying on his back while I shaved him but I did not remove my clothes. I don’t know how long it took but we were chatting as well. After I finished we both went into the toilet where Lama took a shower while I poured the water into the sink,” she told the court. 

She added: “I left Lama in the toilet and went back to the room. It was hot so I took off my tights and shirt while I stayed in my underwear and bra. I laid in the bed while Lama came out of the toilet, turned off the light and laid on top of me.”

She informed the court that the deceased strongly warned her not to cheat on him as he planned to travel for studies and that she promised never to cheat on him.

However, she continued to inform the court that the deceased told “me that he wanted us to have sex but I told him that we could not because I had sealed myself. He then took his hand and pressed it on my neck while he was also trying to force himself to have sex with me as he was trying to insert his privates in me through the sides of my underwear.”

The murder trial continues as Sinyan gives her testimony.
