The Gambia’s minister of Justice and Attorney General has expressed regret about the government’s slow pace in expediting the country’s draft constitution.
Dawda Jallow made the remarks today (28 August) while speaking at a press conference on the draft constitution held at the Sir Dawda K. Jawara Conference Centre.
However, he assured Gambians of the government’s commitment to ushering in a new constitution before the next presidential election.
“Government everywhere make commitments and we make promises but sometimes the realities don’t help you to realise your timeline. So, we regret that we are not beating our timeline. But we are committed that the constitution will be in place sometime in 2025 if it sails through all the process,” he said.
He added: “the Government of the Gambia remain committed to ushering in a new progressive constitution that is an embodiment of our collective will and resolve for democracy, good governance and separation of powers, sustainable environment and equitable distribution and use of resources, rule of law, equitable of principle and fundamental human rights and freedom.”
