Two Gambian traffic police officers have been attacked on night duty between Brusubi Turntable and Senegambia area.
The suspected attackers are known to have fled before a backup team of patrolling armed police officers arrived at the scene
Speaking to the Police media team, one of the police officers who was on duty, Sub-inspector Badjie, explained that his fellow officer was being physically attacked by an unknown taxi driver who refused to stop at their mounted checkpoint while speeding with only one headlight.
“We saw a taxi driver coming with one headlight. Then my colleague stopped him but the driver refused to stop, and then my colleague Tamsir followed after him. But when Tamsir returned, we saw the taxi driver come back and the driver started assaulting him,” he said.
The cop expressed concern while adding “this is something that has been happening to security officers especially traffic officers.”
Police have vowed to trace the attackers and bring them to justice. This happened less than two months after some traffic officers were also assaulted. The culprits of that action was arrested and prosecuted.
In 2023, two young Gambian police personnel were shot dead while another one young cop was seriously injured after an assailant opened fire on them. A suspect has been arrested and is currently on trial for murder.
