Two young Gambian Police officers who were shot dead have been remembered a year later after being shot dead while manning a checkpoint. 

PC Pateh Jallow and PC Sang J Gomez died of gunshot wounds while their colleague Nancy Jallow sustained serious injuries after an assailant opened fire on them. A man suspected of the shooting is currently facing trial at the Banjul High Court.

In his remembrance speech, The Gambia’s Inspector General of Police, Seedy Muctarr Touray, described the officers as “heroes who died in the service of the country”. 

“We at Gambia Police Force, we will continue to remember them in our prayers for as long as we live. We pray that the Almighty Allah forgive their shortcomings and grant their souls in the highest Jannah.

“Today is exactly one years since their demise, and in line with service tradition, we will hold such remembrance parade to honour them for their commendable service to the people of The Gambia,”he said.

The top cop called on all Gambians to remember the fallen heroes and pray for their gentle souls to rest in peace.

However, he highlighted the risk serving police officers face in keeping people and their properties safe. 

“In as much as it’s a noble profession, policing is a dangerous job that comes with a high risk to men and women in uniform,”he added.
