Lamin Njie’s journey began in Gambia, a nation marked by limited opportunities and economic challenges. Driven by the hope for a brighter future, he set out on a perilous trek through West Africa, ultimately crossing the treacherous Mediterranean Sea in search of a new life in Europe.

His journey led him through Libya, where he faced dangers such as human trafficking and violence, conditions that countless migrants encounter. After enduring these challenges, Lamin finally reached Italy, where he arrived on the shores filled with both relief and trepidation.

In Italy, he spent a year navigating a new culture and learning the language. Despite the obstacles, he worked tirelessly, taking on various jobs to support himself and send remittances back to his family in Gambia.

His financial support enabled them to make significant improvements in their lives, ultimately transitioning from renting a small, cramped house to purchasing their own home, a dream Lamin had long cherished.

In pursuit of greater stability, Lamin relocated to Sweden, where he continued to refine his painting skills. However, he later moved to Germany, where he hoped to build a more secure future. He made a new asylum claim there.

But Lamin’s aspirations were abruptly interrupted when he received a letter rejecting his asylum request. “I appealed against their decision, believing that I had a strong case,” he explained. Yet, the morning of his arrest shattered his hopes.

“The police arrived at my home, took me into custody, and transported me to Frankfurt for deportation,” he recounted, his voice filled with disbelief. “I was told by the German police that our government claimed there were enough jobs in Gambia, and that we didn’t deserve to stay in their country.”

Lamin’s story is emblematic of the struggles faced by many asylum seekers, highlighting the harsh realities of migration, the dreams that can be crushed in an instant, and the ongoing fight for dignity and a better life.
