Imam Baba Leigh, a prominent Gambian cleric, has delivered a passionate critique of the African Union (AU) and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), accusing them of failing to address the pressing issues faced by their citizens.

In a sermon delivered on Friday, he labelled the two organisations as “toothless bulldogs”, expressing deep frustration over their lack of effective response to the ongoing crises affecting the continent.

He emphasised the urgent need for reform, suggesting that these bodies are failing in their fundamental mission to protect and serve the African people.

“I have told the African Union and ECOWAS that these two bodies should be disbanded because they serve no purpose for the people,” he said.

He pointed to the dire situations many Africans face, highlighting the tragic deaths of children in desert crossings and the mistreatment of youth in Libya.

“Haven’t you seen how our children are being killed in the desert? Haven’t you seen how these youths are mistreated in Libya?,” he said, calling for immediate action and accountability from both organisations.
