A transformative karate course jointly hosted by Waza United Karate Club and Busumbala Karate Club concluded during the weekend with the goal of advancing the skills of trainers and athletes while raising the overall standard of the sport.

The three-day event, which began on Friday at Waza United’s training facility in Old Yundum, kicked off with a specialised referee course led by acclaimed Senegalese karate instructor Ibrahima Mbaye.

Esteemed members from both clubs attended, including Sensei Alhusain Trawally, a prominent figure in Shotokan Karate in The Gambia.

“This course is critical for elevating refereeing standards in local competitions,” Sensei Pateh Jobe, Technical Director of Waza United said. 

“It creates new pathways for our athletes to develop their talents and excel in the sport.”

Participants focused on kata, a foundational element of karate involving choreographed sequences that enhance physical and mental discipline.

“Kata fosters strength, flexibility, and endurance,” Sensei Trawally said. 

 He highlighted the enthusiastic participation of young athletes, who represented a significant portion of the attendees.

The course wrapped up with sessions dedicated to kumite, the practice of controlled combat techniques. This component is designed to prepare athletes for practical self-defense scenarios while improving their reaction times and overall combat readiness.

Instructor Ibrahima Mbaye praised the strong partnership between Senegal and The Gambia in advancing karate.

“It is essential to cultivate both athletes and referees in a balanced manner to ensure the sport’s integrity and quality,” he said.
