The Gambia’s parliament has approved a ground-breaking agreement that will allow Gambians to seek legal employment in Spain for a duration of four years.

This initiative, termed “circular migration”, aims to create job opportunities both domestically and abroad, addressing the country’s rising unemployment rates.

During the parliamentary session, trade minister Baboucarr Joof presented the agreement, emphasising its significance for Gambians.

He described it as “an unprecedented achievement”, aligning with the government’s goal to reduce unemployment through legitimate pathways.

“The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) provides a legal avenue for Gambians interested in seasonal employment in Spain, a preferred destination for many seeking better prospects in Europe,” he said.

He highlighted the dangers associated with irregular migration, noting that many Gambians have undertaken perilous journeys to Europe in search of better opportunities.

“This initiative will help combat the issue of irregular migration and its associated risks,” he added, underscoring the potential benefits for the youth of Gambia, who represent the future of the nation.

He assured lawmakers that the agreement would not impose any financial burden on The Gambia, as the Spanish authorities have committed to fully funding the recruitment process.

The successful implementation of this MOU is expected to contribute significantly to the government’s national employment policy, which aims to create 150,000 jobs.
