Residents of Essau have endured almost a week without electricity following an explosion of a transformer owned by the National Water and Electricity Company (NAWEC).
The power outage began after the transformer, which serves a large part of the area, emitted small puffs of smoke—a potential warning sign that reportedly went unaddressed.
Days later, the transformer blew up, cutting power to several neighbourhoods.
A source close to the matter told Gambiana that NAWEC initially responded promptly, arriving on the scene shortly after the explosion and assuring residents that a replacement transformer would be installed by the following Monday.
“However, as of today, no repairs have been made, and residents say they have received no further updates,” said the source, who requested anonymity.
The prolonged blackout has disrupted daily life and business in Essau, with residents expressing growing frustration.
Local shop owners report that the outage has affected their ability to operate, while families face ongoing challenges without reliable access to electricity.
NAWEC has not yet released an official statement about the delay in repairs, leaving many in Essau uncertain about when power will be restored.
