Gambia’s hopes of competing in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) have been dashed after a dramatic 2-1 loss to Comoros in their final qualifier match, held in Morocco.
The Scorpions initially took the lead in the 18th minute, courtesy of newcomer Alasan Jatta, who impressed with a well-placed finish.
However, Comoros quickly equalised through R. Said, who capitalised on a defensive lapse to level the scoreline.
Despite showing resilience and maintaining a steady tempo throughout the match, Gambia’s defensive frailties were exposed in the dying minutes.
Comoros striker Maolida sealed the victory in the 90th minute with a decisive strike, leaving Gambian players and fans devastated.
This result marks a disappointing end to Gambia’s AFCON campaign, especially after their historic performance in the 2021 tournament, where they reached the quarterfinals.
Fans back home have expressed frustration and heartbreak, lamenting the missed opportunity to see their team compete on African football’s biggest stage in Morocco next year.
Sports analysts have pointed to tactical missteps and a lack of depth in the squad as key factors in the team’s failure to qualify.
